The program received clearance from the Institutional Review Board last month and is currently screening potential patients for the procedure. A large number of potential patients include injured military personnel.

During the transplant procedure, a team of up to 15 surgeons and specialists work together to prepare the donor hand and patient. In addition to attaching the limb, microvascular surgeons must attach the tendons, blood vessels and nerves during a 10-14 hour procedure.

Only five other hospitals in the country have programs where surgeons perform hand transplant procedures.
