University of Pennsylvania Researchers Develop Cartilage Regeneration Technology

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia are working on cartilage regeneration solutions that could lead to better treatments for knee conditions and injuries, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer report.

University professors Jason Burdick and Robert Mauk and their team have been able to grow chondrocytes from adult stem cells derived from bone marrow. The cells are embedded in a hyaluronic acid gel and compressed into metal pistons developed by Mr. Mauk. The team plans to test the technology on animal models next month, according to the report.
