Dr. Nasar, who assisted Dr. Greller in the surgery, worked with Zimmer in the developing the design of the PSI technology. PSI streamline total knee replacement surgery by ensuring accurate and reproducible guide fixation, a process that simplifies the operative procedure by allowing the surgeon to implant a replacement that is a custom fit and designed specifically for an individual patient. PSI calculations are performed prior to surgery and can lead to patient benefits including less blood loss and better alignment, according to the release.
Dr. Greller noted in the release that because this procedure is MRI-based, there is no radiation as with CTs. An MRI also has an advantage over a CT because it provides details about the cartilage wear. Once an MRI is taken, custom guides, specifically designed for each patient, are then manufactured by Zimmer to make an exact template of the knee.
Dr. Greller, an expert on sports medicine and minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder, knee, hip and ankle, said in the release, “This is the next wave. Living with knee pain is not an option.”
