Mr. Woods was injured in his right leg and lower extremities. Orthopedic trauma specialists performed his surgery at the hospital, which is a level 1 trauma center, according to a statement posted on his Twitter account.
“Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia,” said Anish Mahajan, MD, chief medical officer and interim CEO at the medical center. “Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling.”
Mr. Woods was involved in the single-car accident shortly after 7 a.m. PST. He was reported as being responsive and recovering in his hospital room after surgery.
