In the study, researchers measured the motion of the leg with a micro-processor worn around the patient’s ankle after receiving total hip arthroplasty. The device recorded movement in real time.

Patients in the study were monitored for a minimum of 10 years. The researchers found that as the patents aged, the level of activity decreases along with the wear of the joints. The highest wear rate occurred in the first five years and can be used to predict the longevity of the artificial joint.
