Researchers found that there were 273 deaths among NCAA student athletes from 2004-2008, and 29 percent of those were due to medical causes. Sudden cardiovascular-related death represented 56 percent of the medical cases and 75 percent of these sudden deaths were due to exertion.
Sudden cardiac arrest was reported in one of every 43,770 NCAA participants per year and one in every 3,100 Division I male basketball players.
