Researchers gathered information from a database containing NFL statistics for athletes between 1987 and 2000. Forty-two athletes with a history of shoulder stabilization were matched with a control group.
The athletes in the shoulder stabilization group reported a shorter career, approximately 5.2 years, versus the control group, which reported approximately 6.9 years. The shoulder stabilization group also played in fewer games than the control group. Additionally, linemen and linebackers with a history of shoulder stabilization had significantly shorter careers (4.7 years) compared to the control group (6.7 years).
