Study: Moderate Activity Best to Prevent Knee Cartilage Changes

A new study out of the University of California, San Francisco, found that both low and high levels of physical activity can cause faster knee cartilage degeneration when compared with moderate activity levels, according to an Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine report.

After examining 200 patients the investigators found that patients who perform high-impact activities were more likely to experience cartilage degeneration than those with moderate activity. The study monitored patients with MRI to assess T2 relaxation times, which gave researchers information at a biochemical level that could lead to earlier detection of cartilage defects.
