Study Compares Arthrex and Biomet PRP Systems

Surgeons should consider the ability to concentrate platelets and leukocytes with sensitivity to pathologic conditions during platelet-rich plasma injection preparation, according to a study published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Researchers spun PRP from 11 volunteers using the Arthrex ACP Double Syringe System and the Biomet GPS III Mini Platelet Concentration System. The Arthrex system concentrates platelets and minimizes leukocytes while the Biomet system concentrates both platelets and leukocytes.

The growth factors were significantly increased with the Biomet system, compared with the Arthrex system, and the Arthrex system did not have a concentration of PDGF-AB when compared with whole blood. The cellular composition of the PRP had an impact on the growth factor and catabolic cytkine concentrations.
