Researchers interviewed representatives from 34 community hospitals, each of which had more than five years experience with CPOE.

The authors found a strong level of CDS despite the hospitals’ small size and the fact that many physician staff members were independent. The hospitals used medication alerts and order sets, developed governance procedures for CDS and employed staff to customize CDS, according to the study.
