Researchers examined 29 patients who either underwent the microfracture or CAIS procedure. The patients were assessed using the International Knee Documentation Committee test, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score and MRI.
At the two year follow-up, both groups reported a similar lesion size and International Cartilage Repair Society grade. The IKDC score and KOOS of the CAIS group were significantly higher than the MFX group. There was no difference between the two groups in fill of the graft bed, tissue integration or presence of subchondral cysts.
The patients treated with MFX had a significantly higher incidence of intralesional osteophyte formation compared with the CAIS group.
