While patients in the study experienced good outcomes, the results were inferior to those found in previous studies conducted with a younger patient population. Researchers examined 61 patients with grade III or IV cartilaginous lesions of the condyles without clear signs of osteoarthritis. All patients were at least 40 years old and treated with second-generation ACI.
Patients reported an improved International Knee Documentation Committee score. The failure rate was 20 percent, which is higher than the rate reported by younger patient populations. There was faster improvement observed in patients who were treated with the arthroscopic Hyalograft C technique than the open Chondro-Gide MACI procedure.
