Dr. Steven GarfinSteven Garfin, MD (UC San Diego School of Medicine). Dr. Garfin is the chair of orthopedic surgery and a distinguished professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He has been president of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgeons and elected as one of San Diego’s Physicians of Exceptional Excellence. He also trains orthopedic spine surgeons in a fellowship program.

 

Throughout his career, Dr. Garfin published more than 260 articles and authored around 120 book chapters. His research focuses on pedicle screws, lumbar and anterior plating systems, kyphoplasty for osteoporotic vertebral fractures and artificial discs. He has been involved in designing and participating in clinical trial assessments for new spinal deformity, injury and disorder treatments.

 

He has engaged in trialing biologic alternatives to bone grafts for spinal fusion. His work contributed to developing international standards for spine surgical care.

 

Dr. Garfin earned his medical degree at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and completed a residency at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His additional training includes a fellowship at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.
