Riddell, a long-time supplier of NFL helmets, has been working on a new helmet design that the company claims to decrease concussions by 31 percent. Dr. Maroon co-authored a paper commissioned by Riddell and suggested that the helmets undergo further testing. He told the New York Times that Riddell advertising overreached his results, according to the report.
Dr. Maroon is a member of the NFL’s concussion policy committee, which has recently been criticized by the House Judiciary Committee for inadequate research and ethics related to player concussions. He has also helped develop the ImPACT concussion management testing.
