The guidelines are intended to equip physicians, coaches and athletes with strategies for preventing sudden deaths among younger athletes. They include the following recommendations:
• Introduce new conditioning activities slowly.
• Do not use conditioning activities as punishment.
• Strength and conditioning coaches and medical staff should undergo continuing education to better understand safe condition of young athletes.
• Athletes should have access to medical supervision.
The guidelines were introduced at NATA’s annual meeting in St. Louis.
