More specialized hospitals experienced fewer serious post-surgical complications such as infections, blood clots and heart problems, as well as fewer deaths, according to a University of Iowa press release on the study.

The study, which examined Medicare data from 2001-2005, found the rate of post-surgery infection for knee and hip replacement patients decreased from 2.6 percent at the least specialized hospitals to 1.6 percent at the most specialized hospitals, according to the release.
