Rhode Island Orthopedic Surgeon’s License Revoked After Performing Surgery Under the Influence of Prescription Drugs

Robert Villarreal, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, had his medical license suspended after admitting to performing surgery under the influence of prescription drugs that were illegally obtained, according to a local WPRI report.

Dr. Villarreal admitted to an agent from the Drug Enforcement Agency that he has written prescriptions for Rhode Island Hospital employees if they provided him with a portion of the drugs for his personal use. In addition to his license suspension, he has been arrested by the DEA.
