The proposal has been initiated by orthopedic surgeon George Paletta, MD, who intends to open such a facility for his practice, Regeneration Orthopedics.
Hospital officials are expected to put up a fight, though, and many say the facility would be a hospital under Missouri legal definitions and should be required to comply with hospital regulations.
The state would decide whether not the facility is considered a hospital prior to opening.
Dr. Paletta said the center would let up to six patients per stay for a maximum of three nights for conditions not requiring hospital care. But hospital officials argue Dr. Paletta’s facility would have an unfair advantage.
