Physician Recruitment Survey Shows Hospital Employment is Up

A recent Merritt Hawkins physician recruitment survey indicates that hospital employment is on the rise and that solo practice may be on the decline.

According to the survey, which tracked more than 2,700 physician recruiting assignments the physician search firm conducted last year, only 28 of those assignments — or one percent — were for solo physicians. Less than a decade ago, 22 percent of the firm’s recruiting assignments were for solo physicians.

Meanwhile, 63 percent of the firm’s search assignments last year featured hospital employment of the physician, up seven percentages points from the year before. In 2004, only 11 percent of the firm’s searches involved hospital employment.

Merritt Hawkins predicts that more than 75 percent of newly hired physicians will be hospital employees within two years.
