Padres pitcher Colin Rea to undergo PRP treatment after Dr. James Andrews consultation: 3 notes

San Diego Padres right handed pitcher Colin Rea will pursue platelet-rich plasma treatment after meeting with Dr. James Andrews of the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Fla., MLB Trade Rumors reports.

Here are three notes:

 

1. Mr. Rea will rest for three to four weeks after receiving the treatment, and then being a throwing program in hopes of avoiding Tommy John surgery.

 

2. Mr. Rea had previously intended to undergo TJ surgery, but changed his mind after hearing encouraging results on the PRP treatment Los Angeles Angels pitcher Garrett Richards underwent.

 

3. The risk in the treatment is still being explored, as orthopedic surgeons everywhere, attempt to develop a standard procedure for it.
