Orthopedist Dr. Lee Berger Develops Microchip With Patient Info for Implants

Lee Berger, MD, an orthopedist who practices in North Bergen and Fair Lawn, N.J., has developed a microchip that can be placed within surgical implants and transmit patient information, according to a report by the Hudson Reporter.

The device, Ortho-Tag, can transmit patient history, medication and the make and model of the implant through a touch probe that scans the microchip. Physicians can also continue to add information to the chip over time.

To address safety concerns, Dr. Berger created a pass code requirement and encrypted the data. He is planning on applying for FDA approval.
