Orthopedic surgeons are seeing more patients with debilitating arthritis of the thumb, according to a Newswise report.

As more baby boomers age, thumb arthritis has become more common — especially among female patients. The first line of treatment often includes using a splint to restrict motion, anti-inflammatory cream and hand therapy. The second line of treatment is cortisone injections, with surgery as the final option.
