Orthopedic Surgeons Advocate for Insurance Marketplace Antitrust Law Reform

On April 26, hundreds of orthopedic surgeons converged on Capitol Hill to advance orthopedic issues before Congress as part of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons National Leadership Conference.

The attendees promoted the organization’s new “A Nation in Motion Campaign” and delivered an educational board game highlighting orthopedic scenarios to Congressional offices.

Participants also encouraged Congress members to inject competition into the health insurance marketplace by reforming current antitrust laws. “Antitrust enforcement policies and recent healthcare industry consolidation enable a select few health plans to dominate the healthcare market and force physicians into unilateral, non-negotiable contracts that can deny patients access to orthopedic care,” according to an AAOS news release.

Surgeons asked their representatives to co-sponsor the Quality Health Care Coalition Act, a bipartisan antitrust reform bill.
