Dr. Garcia is also a fellow with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the North American Spine Society, Southern Orthopedic Association and the Florida Orthopedic Association. He is also the medical director for the scoliosis screening program at local schools and previously served as the chief of orthopedic surgery at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center.
During his career, Dr. Garcia has also employed dynamic stabilization of the spine using the Dynesys system. The new technology is an alternative to the traditional spinal fusions.
“The system allows the vertebrae to move forward and backward, while holding them in the correct position and preventing side to side movement, thus correcting the lack of stability,” said Dr. Garcia in an HCA International Health article. “Traditionally, patients in need of spinal stabilization undergo fusion surgery, losing movement in the fused vertebrae. This new system makes it possible to correct the instability without losing it.”
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Garcia has conducted research on several topics, including lumbar artificial disc replacement and lumbar total disc replacement. The articles based on his research have appeared in professional journals such as Roundtables in Spine Surgery, European Spine Journal and Spine. He has also presented his research at international conferences.
Dr. Garcia earned his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, where he also earned his masters degree in public health. His additional training includes a residency in orthopedic surgery at Tulane and a spine surgery fellowship at North Carolina Spine Center in Chapel Hill.
