Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Robert G. Marx of the Hospital for Special Surgery

Robert G. Marx, MD, is the director of the Foster Center for Clinical Outcome Research at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He has a professional interest in using the arthroscopic technique to reconstruct ACL tears and revision surgery for failed shoulder dislocation repairs. He recently participated in a study showing that high-volume hospitals improve orthopedic outcomes.

“Compared to local hospitals, high-volume regional centers are associated with improved outcomes and decreased post-operative complications,” said Dr. Marx in a news release. “Our analyses showed that regionalizers are less likely to have infections or complications.”

During his career, Dr. Marx has received many grants for his research. He was awarded research funding from the ACL Study Group and the MacArthur Foundation to study cartilage regeneration and repair. He has also been the lead investigator for a study of outcomes after joint replacement surgery funded by the United States Government. His research has spanned several topics, including revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in adolescents and arthroscopic partial meniscectomy in osteoarthritis.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Marx also serves as a professor of orthopedic surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery and Weill Medical College in New York City. He also serves on the editorial advisory board of Muscle and Fitness Magazine and co-chairs the scientific advisory committee of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine.

Dr. Marx earned his medical degree at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, and completed his residency at the University of Toronto in Ontario. His additional training includes a fellowship in sports medicine, knee and shoulder surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery.
