Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Philip Lucas of Rhode Island Hospital

Philip Lucas, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, recently received the hospital’s Milton Hamolsky Physician Award for leadership commitment to patient care, hospital and community service and recognition by his peers. He has a professional interest in treating patients with severe injuries and deformities. Whenever possible, he uses cutting-edge minimally invasive procedures combined with a comprehensive rehabilitation program to treat his patients.

“Dr. Lucas has dedicated himself to providing our patients with compassionate, high-quality care for more than three decades,” said Michael G. Ehrlich, MD, chief or orthopedic surgery at Rhode Island Hospital, in an EastBay RI report. “He is a role model for our residents, and we are fortunate to have such a skilled, dedicated orthopedic surgeon on our staff.”

Dr. Lucas also engages in research on the long-term outcomes of lumbar discectomy, minimally invasive endoscopic spinal fusions, spinal fusions using BMP-6 and the long-term results of kyphoplasty for the treatment of spinal fractures.

In addition to his practice, Dr. Lucas is also an associate clinical professor of orthopedics at The Western Alpert Medical School of Brown University and an examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He previously served as the director of the division of orthopedic spine surgery at Rhode Island Hospital. He also serves in various professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society and the New England Orthopedic Society.

During his career, Dr. Lucas has earned the Outstanding Physicians Award from Harvard Community Health and teaching recognition from Brown University. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and completed his residency at Rhode Island Hospital. His additional training includes a fellowship at the University of Toronto.
