Dr. Abel’s clinical expertise includes general pediatric orthopedics, scoliosis, hip dysplasia, cerebral palsy, spine surgery and spinal disorders. He has also conducted research and clinical assessments of spinal deformities in children and management of cerebral palsy.
“Orthopedic surgery is a specialty that is continually advancing through innovations in material science, engineering and biology,” Dr. Abel said in a university news release. He previously served as vice chairman of the orthopedics department and the interim chair of the department.
During his career, Dr. Abel has served as a staff surgeon and research director at Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Va., and completed a tour of duty in the Persian Gulf. He also founded the orthopedic Virginia Children’s Specialty Service Clinic in Bristol, Va. Dr. Abel is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine and the Scoliosis Research Society.
Dr. Abel earned his medical degree at Tulane University and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of California, San Diego. His additional training includes a fellowship in pediatric orthopedics at Children’s Hospital Health Center and the University of California in San Diego.
