During his career, he has been recognized multiple times by the Society of Reconstructive Microsurgeons with the Best Microsurgery Case of the Year award, a feat that he was the first to achieve. In one case, Dr. Higgins treated a patient who had lost all function in his hand and arm with four microsurgeries and intensive therapy. The patient regained full function of his hand and arm.
Dr. Higgins has also received the 2010 American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery Godina Traveling Fellow award and served a visiting professorship at the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He is a member of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons and was named the MD Daily Record Healthcare Hero in 2008.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Higgins has also participated in several research studies and clinical research projects. He has published work on several topics, including carpal tunnel release, in professional journals.
Dr. Higgins earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, where he also completed his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency. His additional training includes a fellowship in hand surgery at The Curtis National Hand Center.
