Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. James F. Mooney III, of the Medical University of South Carolina

James F. Mooney III, MD, is the chief of the division of pediatric orthopedic surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina Health in Charleston. He treats pediatric patients with a variety of conditions, including spinal deformity, fractures and hand abnormalities.

In addition to his practice, Dr. Mooney also serves as a professor of orthopedic surgery at MUSC and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of the Surgical Orthopaedic Advances. He also serves as a reviewer for three professional journals, including the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics. In addition to his editorial work Dr. Mooney has published articles on a variety of topics, including obesity in children and lower extremity compartment syndrome in infants associated with child abuse.

Dr. Mooney’s research has received grants from the Health Services Research Center and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation. He is a fellow with the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine and the Scoliosis Research Society as well as a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

During his career, Dr. Mooney has been named to the Best Doctors registry and Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. He has also been named to the HOUR Detroit Magazine’s top physician’s list and received the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America’s traveling fellowship in 2000.

Dr. Mooney earned his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at North Carolina Baptist Hospital/Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C. He also completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopedic surgery at Children’s Hospital of Boston.
