Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Frederick M. Azar of UT-Campbell Clinic

Frederick M. Azar, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon and chief of staff at University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics in Tennessee. He also serves as the team physician for the Memphis Grizzlies and the University of Memphis athletics. His leadership also extends far beyond his work with professional sports, including a position on the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons board of directors.

Dr. Azar also serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine and on the advisory editorial board of AAOS Now. He has published in more than 50 professional textbooks and journals. He is also a professor at UT-Campbell Clinic in the department of orthopedic surgery and director of the university’s sports medicine fellowship.

His research has focused on several different topics, including sports injuries and cartilage restoration. He has been part of a project using porcine cartilage constructs while searching for ways to develop healthy human cartilage tissue for implantation.

“The cells attach themselves to the bone, multiply and mature to form cartilage repair,” Dr. Azar said in a university release. “The procedure is relatively new and the longevity is unknown at this point. But the success rate is reported to be between 70 percent and 80 percent.”

During his career, Dr. Azar has also served as a delegate at large for the American Orthopaedic Association and is an active member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America and the Society of NBA Team Physicians. He is also a member of the Herodicus Sports Medicine Society and the Magellan Society.

Dr. Azar earned his medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed his residency at UT-Campbell Clinic. His additional training includes a fellowship in sports medicine at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Ala. He also participated in the AOSSM traveling fellowship program and the AAOS leadership fellows program.
