Recently, Dr. Cammisa commented on bone-morphogenic protein use in spinal fusions for Arthritis Today. He said studies on BMP use are important, but there needs to be a more extensive examination of the long term effects of BMP use, both from a procedural and a cost standpoint.

“Short term obviously the hospital costs are increased,” Dr. Cammisa said in the story. “However, long term, if the use of BMP results in a higher fusion rate, there may be less need for revision surgeries in the future and therefore it would be a bottom line decrease in cost; as a result we need more longitudinal data to determine its cost effectiveness.”

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Cammisa conducts research that he has published in several leading journals, including Spine and The Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques. His current research focuses on computer assistance image guidance, endoscopic spine surgery, demineralized bone matrix and bone growth enhancement.

Dr. Cammisa has earned several recognitions throughout his career, including the spine research award from the Easter Orthopaedic Association and the North American Traveling Fellowship from the American Orthoapedic Association. His additional affiliations include the Cervical Spine Research Society and the International Society for the Study of Lumbar Spine. Dr. Cammisa has also been named to New York Magazine‘s “Best Doctors in New York” for multiple years.

Dr. Cammisa earned his medical degree from the College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York City and completed his residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He also completed a fellowship in spine surgery at the University of Miami.
