During his career, Dr. Bunta helped establish the Northwestern bone health sub-specialty and its Bone Health and Osteoporosis Program, of which he serves as associate director. He also participated in the establishment of and chairs the orthopedic surgery oversight committee at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Prior to joining Northwestern, Dr. Bunta served as the director of orthopedic surgery and the orthopedic surgery residency program at Lutheran General Hospital near Chicago.
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Bunta has authored numerous articles on the challenges and benefits of an osteoporosis and fracture intervention program in a hospital and outpatient setting. He also focuses his interest on quality and safety issues in the operating room and inpatient setting. He has received numerous awards during his career from the hospitals where he practiced, and he currently serves as the chair of the American Orthopaedic Association’s Own the Bone steering committee.
Dr. Bunta is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. In addition to his role as a surgeon, Dr. Bunta is also an innovator and is credited with designing the extra large hip retractor blades for Innomed Orthopedic Instruments.
Dr. Bunta earned his medical degree at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and completed his residency at Northwestern McGaw. His additional experience includes two years as a general medical officer in the United States Air Force.
