Currently, 20 physicians serve in Congress (17 in the House of Representatives and three in the Senate), of which 17 will run for re-election. The Congressmen not up for re-election are Rep. Ron Paul, MD, (R-Texas); Sen. Rand Paul, MD, (R-Ken.) and Sen. Tom Coburn, MD, (R-Okla.). In addition to the 17 incumbents, 11 additional physicians will run as challengers.
Physician candidates said their desire to run for Congress was sparked by healthcare policy decisions, including the healthcare reform law and Medicare’s sustainable growth rate.
