New Jersey Sports Medicine Physician Indicted for Healthcare Fraud

John Costino, DO, a North Wildwood, N.J.-based sports medicine and family practice physician, and his wife Barbara Costino were indicted on three counts of healthcare fraud, according to a Press of Atlantic City report.

The charges cover false claims involving patients treated by Dr. Costino between Oct. 2004 and June 2006. Federal prosecutors claimed Dr. Costino billed healthcare payors for physical therapy services that were never rendered, according to the report. The exact role of his wife in the scheme was not disclosed.

In addition to the fraud charges, Dr. Costino faces separate charges involving the distribution of a controlled substance.

Dr. Costino was previously charged with submitting fraudulent bills, but that indictment was dismissed.

Dr. Costino’s licensed was revoked in 2009.
