New Defense Funding Allocates $30M for Upper Extremity Injury Treatment Research

In December 2011, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of Fiscal Year 2012 was signed into law, which h includes $30 million in orthopedic research funding for the Department of Defense peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program, according to an AAOS Now report.

The funding was increased by 25 percent from its previous level. The program was designed for funding research that could lead to improved care for military personnel who sustain traumatic injuries to their upper extremities. Currently, extremities injuries account for the most long-term morbidity among injured military personnel, as well as approximately 66.6 percent of inpatient hospital costs and disability payments, according to the report.
