Dr. Della Valle’s study was on whether the femoral head size affects dislocation rates among patients undergoing revision hip arthroplasty. The award is given to the researcher who demonstrates outstanding contributions to the field of hip surgery.
Dr. Della Valle and his colleagues followed 184 patients who received revision hip replacements. Half of the patient group received 32-mm femoral head implants while the other half received 36-40-mm femoral head implants. The patients in the larger femoral head group experienced a dislocation rate of 1.1 percent, compared with the 8.7 percent dislocation rate among patients in the smaller femoral head group.
The authors of this study now routinely use larger femoral heads with a highly cross-linked polyethylene acetabular liner in revision hip arthroplasties.
