Michigan Physicians Protest Governor’s Tax Proposal

The Michigan State Medical Society and the Michigan Osteopathic Association urged the state’s lawmakers to reject a tax on physicians that Gov. Jennifer Granholm included in her proposed budget.

“This budget proposal rehashes the old, failed proposals that would increase the cost of doing business in Michigan and drive people away to find opportunities in other states,” said MSMS President Richard Smith, MD, in a press release. “In fact, while a national debate rages on about the best way to make healthcare more accessible, this plan would make our healthcare system less accessible and more expensive.”

Such a tax, which was proposed but rejected last year, would drive physicians out of the state and would force physicians to lay off essential staff, according to the physician groups.
