According to the indictment and evidence presented at the trial, Mr. Ortiz operated Daky Medical Supply Corp. in Miami, which provided durable medical equipment to Medicare patients. From Apr. 2003-March 2004, Mr. Ortiz submitted $6.2 million in false claims to Medicare for DME that were not prescribed by physicians or were not provided, according to the release.
Mr. Ortiz also had an ownership role in a second Miami DME company, Reny Medical Equipment & Supply, according to trial evidence, and he caused the company to submit around $6.9 million in false claims to Medicare between Feb. 2004 and July 2004. Medicare paid Reny Medical around $2.8 million for these claims, according to the release.
