Miami Medical Equipment Supply Company Owner Convicted of Medicare Fraud

Adonis Ortiz of Miami was convicted of healthcare fraud and conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and faces up to 40 years in prison, according to a news release from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

According to the indictment and evidence presented at the trial, Mr. Ortiz operated Daky Medical Supply Corp. in Miami, which provided durable medical equipment to Medicare patients. From Apr. 2003-March 2004, Mr. Ortiz submitted $6.2 million in false claims to Medicare for DME that were not prescribed by physicians or were not provided, according to the release.

Mr. Ortiz also had an ownership role in a second Miami DME company, Reny Medical Equipment & Supply, according to trial evidence, and he caused the company to submit around $6.9 million in false claims to Medicare between Feb. 2004 and July 2004. Medicare paid Reny Medical around $2.8 million for these claims, according to the release.
