More than 3 million people enrolled in Medicaid in the year ended in June 2009, pushing enrollment to a record 46.8 million, according to data published by the Kaiser Family Foundation and cited in a Washington Post story.
The analysis suggests the economic downturn has led more people to join Medicaid recently than at any time since the beginning of the federal program, according to the Post.
While other sectors of the economy may be showing signs of improvement, the continuing increases in Medicaid enrollment are putting a squeeze on many state budgets around the country, according to the Post report.
