Maryland orthopedic surgeon receives Athletic Trainers’ Association award: 6 details

Orthopedic surgeon Samuel Matz, MD, of Westminster, Md.-based Carroll Health Group Orthopaedics, received Maryland Athletic Trainers’ Association’s Presidential Award of Merit, according to Carroll County Times.

1. Dr. Matz specializes in knee and shoulder surgery as well as sports medicine.

2. The Presidential Award acknowledges an organization, non-athletic medical trainer or allied health provider for their efforts in promoting and raising awareness of the athletic training profession.

3. Caroll County Times reported Dr. Matz has worked with athletic trainers at Westminster-based McDaniel College and members of Carroll County’s Board of Education to bring athletic trainers to high schools in the county.

4. Dr. Matz has served as team physician and head orthopedic surgeon for McDaniel College and Emmitsburg, Md.-based Mount Saint Mary’s University for the past 25 years.

5. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

6. After earning his medical degree from Baltimore-based University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Matz completed his residency at Memorial Orthopaedic Surgical Group in Long Beach, Calif.
