Many States Sliced Medicaid Pay Rates in 2009, More Plan for 2010

The Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured reports that 33 states cut or froze Medicaid payment rates to providers in Fiscal Year 2009 and more (39) plan to do so in FY 2010, according to a release from the commission.

States estimate Medicaid enrollment grew by an average of 5.4 percent in FY 2009, the highest rate in six years, and states expect Medicaid enrollment to grow by 6.6 percent in FY 2010.

Due to funds from the federal economic stimulus package, states managed to raise Medicaid spending by an average of 7.9 percent in FY 2009, the highest rate in five years, and Medicaid spending for FY 2010 is expected to grow by at least 6.3 percent.
