Los Angeles Physician Performs First MAKOplasty Total Hip Replacement

The MAKOplasty procedure uses the RIO system featuring a surgeon-interactive robotic arm and visualization technology to create a personalized surgical plan preoperatively using a CT scan of the patient’s hip. During the procedure, the system creates a three-dimensional view of the patient’s bone surface and correlates the image to the pre-programmed surgical plan.

The surgeon uses the robotic arm to manipulate cutting tools inside the hip and receives feedback alerts when approaching the boundary of the perimeter of the bone preparation. MAKOplasty procedures have previously been used during knee surgery.
