Kerlan-Jobe Foot and Ankle Surgeon Discusses Increased Injury Instances Among NFL Players

Philip Kwong, MD, a foot and ankle surgeon at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, told Sports Illustrated that foot and ankle injuries have increased among sports players because they are being more aggressively diagnosed than they were in the past.

NFL football players usually receive foot and ankle injuries from having their foot planted and then dragging or rotating the ankle during play. The trend among players is to spin and punch at a ball rather than rely on form tackling.

Another trend Dr. Kwong mentioned was that more athletes are recovering and continuing their careers after ankle and knee problems, which could lead to less stability in the ankle and re-injury. He recommended bracing and taping to prevent injuries, although these methods aren’t clinically proven.
