Kaiser Permanente educates youth athletes on concussions: 4 highlights

Kaiser Permanente of Napa-Solano, Calif., is educating youth athletes about the severity of concussions through The Kaiser Permanente Youth Sports Concussion clinic, reports the Daily Republic.

Here are four insights:

 

1. The Kaiser Permanente educational team includes specialists in family and pediatrics, sports medicine, neuropsychology, vestibular therapy and health education.

 

2. Athletes need to be aware of second impact syndrome, which comes when an athlete returns to sports to suffer a second hit in the same game.

 

3. The team uses computerized neuro-psychological testing to diagnose and treat individual concussions.

 

4. Concussions have risen 200 percent in the past 10 years among teenagers ages 14 to 19.
