An unlicensed medical student handled key portions of the patient’s postoperative care and failed to recognize the symptoms of a major surgical injury, according to the report. The patient’s attending physician is also recorded as personally supervising one of the 23 follow-up surgeries at a time when he was also scheduled to be on vacation in Africa, according to the report.
The hospital is working with the Joint Commission during the investigation. The commission previously required the hospital to improve areas in 2007 and again in 2009 after the hospital violated pain management and pain assessment standards which resulted in a patient’s death.
