John Finkenberg, MD (Alvarado/Helix Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, San Diego). Dr. Finkenberg has been in private practice in San Diego since 1992 and served as chief of the orthopedic department at Alvarado Hospital Medical Center. He was also on the hospital’s executive supervisory committee for many years. He is currently the acting director of the Alvarado Spine Center.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Finkenberg serves as a surgical consultant for a spinal instrumentation company on the faculty of the North American Spine Society’s hands-on surgery course. He also coordinates a multicenter prospective outcome studies trial on lumbar and cervical spine fusion. He has a patent for diagnosing fractures with intrasound vibration.
Beyond the medical field, Dr. Finkenberg is an artist and sculpted statues on display at UCLA Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Grossmont Hospital Women’s Center. He is on the editorial board for Sports Medicine Digest and associate editor of The Spine Journal.
Dr. Finkenberg earned his medical degree at the University of California Los Angeles and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, Calif. His additional training includes a spine fellowship at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore.
