Integra Announces First Surgical Use of Coral Spinal System

Plainsboro, N.J.-based Integra LifeSciences has announced that the first clinical application of the Coral Spinal System for minimally invasive spine surgery was performed by Dr. Morteza Farr from Santa Cruz, Calif., the surgeon designer of the new technology, according to an Integra news release.

The Coral system provides a minimally invasive option for lumbar spinal surgery that allows surgeons to place the pedicle screws through a percutaneous tube, according to the release. This procedure may lead to faster procedures, reduced blood loss, less tissue trauma, reduced postoperative pain and a shorter hospital stay, according to the company.

The Coral system’s percutaneous tubes can help reduce the number of required steps for the surgeon. The tubes snap on to the screw head, eliminating the need to twist the tube or tighten a set screw, according to the release.
