A study conducted by the Center for Studying Health System Change for the NIHCR indicated that IPAs can serve as a model in how to coordinate health IT activities to other small physician practices because they are used to limited technical and financial resources when it comes to adopted electronic health records and other health IT changes.
Five organizations participated in the study: Physician Health Partners in Denver; Genesis Physicians Group in Dallas; Huron Valley Physicians Association in Ann Arbor, Mich.; Physicians Medical Group of Santa Cruz County in Santa Cruz, Calif.; and Mid Rogue Independent Physician Association in Grants Pass, Ore.
In order to overcome challenges faced with adopted expensive EHR systems and health information exchanges, the study gives recommendations for smaller physician practices on how to facilitate EHR choice and interoperability, how to enhance the business case for health IT adoption, how to secure member practices’ support through physician leadership and how to continue ongoing training.
