Currently, Illinois state officials check the National Practitioner Data Bank and the Federation of State Medical Boards for prior actions taken on a physician’s license before issuing a license to a new physician. However, the databases may not always be up-to-date with recent warnings and issues, according to the Chicago Tribune.
About 12 states require physicians submit a Federation Credentials Verification Service, which confirms a physician’s record. Illinois will join those other states if the legislation is passed, according to the report.
The legislation was filed Tuesday by state Rep. Mary Flowers (D-Chicago).
