Illinois Announces Medicaid Managed-Care Pilot

The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services has issued a request for proposals seeking two managed care organizations to provide Medicaid covered services to some 40,000 individuals in suburban Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kankaee, Lake and Will counties, according to a press release from HFS.

The pilot would affect older adults and those with disabilities in the specified counties and would focus on traditional medical services, with later phases adding long-term care. HFS plans to include pay-for-performance incentives for the managed care organizations, which in turn would be expected to reward hospitals, physician practices and other providers with incentives based on performance and outcomes, according to the release.

HFS, which hopes to save $200 million over five years through the pilot, plans to evaluate the approach in the selected counties before deciding whether to expand the program to other parts of the state, according to the release.
